Obituary - Joy White

Joy White, the wife of Hedley,  an ex AWW and ex WAGS Walker passed away on 10th February 2022.

  Myriam writes:

Joy and Hedley met Maurice in an excursion organised by an association called “Casa” back in 1995. Since then they had become good friends.  Whenever the Whites were in the Algarve, they would join in the monthly Saturday walks led by Maurice.  Joy’s cheerful and friendly disposition endeared her to everyone.  She was always kind and helpful.

Though she never did the Round the Corner Walks, she and Hedley would support us by having dinner with us on the evening between legs.. In recent  years, they spent less time in Portugal, but whenever they were here, we would meet up, and Hedley would often walk..

She was very close to her 3 sons.  Her passing was a great loss to them and especially to Hedley.

I have lost a great and caring friend.

Joy will be sorely missed.  She will be remembered by anyone who had had the pleasure of knowing or meeting her.

Hedley keeps in constant contact with us. He continues to come to the Algarve.  We will be seeing him often in the future.

As Hedley returned for a short admin visit in late February, we took the opportunity to meet him and pass on our condolences at a lunch in Recanto dos Mouros. This visit and lunch is recorded

When Maurice was ailing, Joy and Myriam organised a visit to see Esme and Maurice in his Nursing home

On another occasion, Marguerite joined Hedley, Joy and Myriam and myself at a visit to see Esme for lunch at a local pub.

Joy's funeral was held on Friday 4th March 2022 at Hampden Chapel.

The Ames Family Lunch 6th May 2022

On 6th May, many of us  were privileged to join the Ames family for lunch at the Recanto dos Mouros and to remember with them the life of their dear Jill.

Here are a few photographs of the lunch. Special thanks to Yves for the portraiture.

Obituary - Jill Ames

                           Jill Christine Ames

                            12th August 1946 - 4th April 2022

It is with great regret that we record the passing of Jill Ames.

Over the years walking first with the Algarve Wednesday Walkers and then with the AWW offshoots, the WAGS and the APAPS, she had proved herself a resolute and remarkably tough walker, Terry always there by her side when needed.

Sadly however, over the past two or three years, her condition worsened; she required ever increasing care and could no longer walk with us.

On 11th April, a group of friends, the various walking groups well-represented among them, gathered at the Albufeira Crematorium to say farewell to her, with others watching via Zoom. Terry Ames and Monica Mace each said a few words to the gathering, as did Jill´s very old friend Heather from England via Zoom who spoke of the fun the two of them had had together when they were young and then closed with a poem..

Hedley's Hasty Visit 24.02.2022

Sadly, Hedley Whyte, our long time, part time AWW and WAG lost his wife Joy very recently. He had to take a short visit to the Algarve for family reasons.  We wanted to meet him while he was here and because of the support of the WAGS who knew him, the occasion turned into a lunch, organised by Myriam and booked by Rod at one of our favourite venues, the Recanto dos Mouros.

A good turnout of 11, from left:  John, Myriam, Hedley, Paul, Antje, Yves, Hazel, Chris, Maria , Rod, and Lindsey

This time we dined on a Thursday, as Recanto is not open on Wednesday, and also because Hedley only arrived at Faro a couple of hours before lunch.

Condolences were given, and we settled down to the usual splendid fare of the Recanto. This time a la Carte.   We followed the usual practice of saying that we would all order what we liked, and pay only for that, to prevent certain people ordering lobster, oysters,  fillet steak and Chateau de Chatelet, but at the end it was all too much trouble and the bill was split 10 ways. One of these days !!

My Borrego

A very tasty selection, large portions, yet some still made enough room for dessert, which apparently wasn't recorded.

Some lively banter which thankfully wasn't recorded and which I conveniently can't remember.

A lot of flirting took place!, (with the usual suspects)

Not surprised he needs another drink

The ladies look happier!

Some other pix for the record,

As there were so few pix of Hedley I am posting a library photo of Hedley with Hazel on 12.10.2018, which was taken by John and may have been at the 20th Anniversary lunch of the Algarve Way in 2018

It was very nice of him to join us so soon after his recent loss. Both Rod and Hedley made short addresses, remembering Joy and the times we had. A splendid occasion tempered by sadness. Hedley has promised to come back and join us on a saunter or two whenever he can. His links with Algarve remain strong as his eldest son.
Alistair bought his former house in Carvoeiro, and currently lives there.

To finish off a not entirely inappropriate song about Guests and lunch, called 'The Guest(s), by Leonard Cohen from 2012, live in Madrid.

Obituary - Vitor Peres

Sr Vitor Manuel M. Peres

Nacseu: 25/05/1941

Faleceu: 27/12./2021

Dina and Vitor had been married for 55 years at the time of his passing.

She was asked if she would like an eulogy published in the Blog in his memory. She was very pleased with this idea and said it would be a consolation.

VĂtor joined the AWW when he retired from being a banker, around 2000/2001. For some years he was a regular.

Together with Dina

He was a quiet man and very often kept to himself. Because of this, not many realised that he had profound knowledge of Portuguese colonial Africa. One always learned something new when discussing that part of the world with him.

He was also very generous in offering help to friends and neighbours who required assistance. He would often go out of his way to do so.

About 10 years ago he stopped walking with us due to health reasons. Since then, we still occasionally met up for some outdoor activities and updated each other on the phone. His last meeting with us was in 2018 at the 20th Anniversary of AWWs.

He will be missed and remembered.

Obituary - Mark Harmon

Mark Harmon 14.04.1945 to 20.12.2021

We said our last farewells to Mark Harman on Wednesday 29th. December 2021 at Cemiterio Novo de Lagos.  It was attended by 25 or so close family and a few friends including Myriam. There was no religious service but short valedictory addresses were given by Mark's son-in-law, Nuno Barros and by Rod who praised his great contribution to the early AWW and to the creation and first completion of the Via  Algarviana. There was a friendly wake gathering at the Por do Sol Restaurant at Meia Praia.
